The Art of Glazing
Glaze is essentially a mix of minerals suspended in water, brushed or dipped onto a piece before its final trip through the kiln. Under heat, it melts and fuses into a glass-like coating — that's what gives our pieces their color and their smooth, food-safe surface.
Getting our signature sage, terracotta, and cream tones right took a lot of trial and error. We keep a shelf of small test tiles, each one a slightly different mix or firing temperature, so we can see exactly how a glaze will behave before committing a full piece to it.
Even with a formula we trust, no two firings come out identical — kiln temperature, humidity, even where a piece sits can shift the final color slightly. We've come to see that unpredictability as part of what makes each piece one of a kind. Once you understand how glazing works, you'll discover how we set the table with intention, which brings all these handmade pieces together into a complete aesthetic.
