A Day in the Studio

Most days start the same way: coffee first, then a slow walk around the studio before anyone touches a wheel. The morning light through the windows makes it easy to see how a glaze from yesterday actually turned out, which is oddly one of our favorite parts of the day.

Once the clay is centered on the wheel, everything else kind of falls away. There's a moment — hard to describe if you haven't felt it — where the clay stops fighting you and starts moving the way you want. That's usually when a piece starts to feel like it has its own personality.

By late afternoon we're usually loading the kiln for the next firing. This is when we start thinking about what will emerge from the heat. Learn how we glaze ceramic products here, which is where the real transformation happens. After years of doing this, that part still hasn't gotten old.
